Researchers are urging doctors, government authorities and the entire healthcare community to continue the fight against hepatitis C. By combining existing practices with strategic changes, the long-term goals that have been set remain achievable.
The hepatitis C virus is spreading faster than anticipated when the World Health Organization (WHO) set its goal of eliminating hepatitis C completely by 2030. Although modern medicines are more than 95% effective and in many cases hepatitis C can be cured simply and quickly, the disease is diagnosed in only 20–25% of all people living with it. To achieve the WHO target, at least 90% of all infected people must be diagnosed — and only by curing them all can a substantial reduction in new infections be expected.
General practitioners play a crucial role in improving hepatitis C diagnosis. In Lithuania, they have been able to provide preventive hepatitis C screening since May 2022.
It is important to note that hepatitis C is associated with HIV. Today, nearly 2.3 million people worldwide are living with both hepatitis C and HIV. Treating these two viruses as a coinfection and changing the HIV screening strategy so that it is based on indicator conditions could improve diagnostic rates not only for HIV but also for hepatitis C — as well as the prospects of living in a society free from hepatitis C by 2030.
